They are mainly Columbia and HMV records, purchased, we think, during the although some date back to the mid s. They have been stored, for at least 30 years, and potentially since they were bought, on shelves against a north facing wall, that has over the past few years suffered badly from damp.
The albums are cockled, with signs of water staining, and many of the staples that hold them together are corroded.
This audio format consists of a grooved disc made of shellac, lacquer, vinyl, or aluminum. Discs may have a metal, resin, cardboard, or glass core. The modulated sound information is inscribed in the surface material in grooves, which are played back using a needle or stylus. Phonograph records emerged in the late s and ruled as the predominant format for recorded sound from the s through the late s. All grooved disc media must be played back at the appropriate recording speed. They also require appropriate styli for optimal playback fidelity and to reduce disc damage along with equipment that can support the discs’ diameters.
Most discs recorded before have wider grooves often referred to as “coarse” or “standard” grooves , were recorded using equalizations that differ from current standards, and are generally monophonic. A stylus which can support coarse groove and monophonic recordings is necessary for proper playback. Early 78s were often not cut at exactly 78 rotations per minute rpm , so correct speed may not be standardized from one disc to the next.
Acid-free enclosures are strongly advised. Each item should have its own enclosure to protect it from dust, handling damage, and changes in environmental conditions. Archival recordings might be found directly within a paper housing. These paper sleeves are problematic as they are typically acidic and will degrade on the recording surface, leaving behind “paper flour” deposits of dust, fibers, and flakes.

At the time the LP was introduced, nearly all phonograph records for home use were made of an abrasive and therefore noisy shellac compound, employed a much larger groove, and played at approximately 78 revolutions per minute rpm , limiting the playing time of a inch diameter record to less than five minutes per side. Each side of a inch LP could play for about 22 minutes. Re: year old 78RPM record. I only started collecting 78 records a little over 3 years ago, after buying an old wind-up Columbia gramophone at a car boot sale. Naturally I wanted some more records to play on it.
By chance I found a box of old 78s in an antique shop in Eton, Berkshire, just opposite Windsor Castle on the other side of the River Thames. In the box I noticed one of those single-sided Zonophone records with the Zonophone logo embossed on the unrecorded side. I didn’t know if the Zonophone record was rare or valuable, therefore I didn’t actually buy it, but I remembered it because I’d never seen a single-sided record before. It turned out to be the original acoustic recording on Columbia Records FB speed 80 rpm and has no lead-in or lead-out groove, but plays perfectly and is great fun.
A few weeks later I returned to the same shop to see if they had any more old records, but when I looked through the box, the Zonophone single-sided disc had gone. Did I miss a bargain? If so, I’ll keep my eyes open in future. It’s rather sad that the vast majority of 78 records seem to be worthless, simply ending up in landfill. I used to see boxes full of them at car boot sales and even more being thrown in the dump when I used to help out there.
