First dates can be awkward , nerve-wracking, exciting, disastrous, wonderful — any number of things. A big part of this distinction is the first impression you each give and how well you and the other person connect. We all know by now that topics like religion, politics, and the like are best to avoid if you want a first encounter to stay positive and light-hearted. It might be obvious, but the easiest way to connect with someone is to get them talking about themselves. Ask about their hobbies, their interests… do they enjoy activities like sports, painting, spending time outside, reading, or dancing? Maybe you will find something that you both enjoy doing and, if the date goes well, could potentially be an idea for another date later on down the road. Finding out about something interesting about another person that may not otherwise come up in regular conversation is a fun way to get to know them. They make for great icebreaker questions, can be answered by the both of you, and can be as surface level, deep, or silly as you want them to be. Would you rather… go to the beach or the mountains?

How much time you spend together when you first start dating is a hot topic of debate in my friendship group. Even though I appreciate that everyone is different, I’m always in the camp of not seeing each other too much, so you don’t fall into a love bubble and get an unrealistic sense of someone. It’s a hard balance to strike. So, is there a right answer? Well, licensed clinical psychologist Seth Meyers thinks so. He recently wrote in Psychology Today in favor of “the once-a-week rule for new relationships”. Which is pretty much what it sounds like: you start out seeing each other only once a week, then slowly build up. He explains: “To naysayers who say that new lovers should throw caution to the wind and let things flow organically, I would respond by saying that two people who are meant to be together will end up together, regardless of whether they see each other once a week or five times a week.
To be safe, couples would serve themselves well to see each other once a week for the first month, and then increase the frequency with each week after that point. Most importantly, men and women should not feel anxious or rushed in forging a new relationship. The less anxious they feel, the better chance the relationship has of lasting.
The first kiss my boyfriend and I shared as friends-who-now-know-they-like-each-other was nothing short of terrifying. I pulled him into what I thought would be a sweeping, spark-filled smooch and he just stood there, hardly moving. The rest of the date was even more catastrophic. We nervously drank too much and watched Sweet Home Alabama on his bed without looking at each other.
I was convinced we had no chemistry and that I ruined a perfectly-great friendship.
If one does something stupid during the date, the chances of its survival could fade away or disappear immediately. While someone is excited.
Dating is many things: Fun , funny, exciting, enlightening, and sometimes awkward, repetitive, and laborious. One thing it isn’t? It’s the opposite of simple. But what else should we expect from the somewhat colloquial definition of dating that Merriam-Webster defines as “the series of social engagements shared by a couple looking to get married,” which also defines a single date as “a romantic appointment.
Of course, we have a much more fluid understanding of the term today, which simultaneously makes it more fun and less consequential and rigid—but it also tends to complicate things further.
